Keep your dog healthy from the inside out…
People strive to improve their own health through proper nutrition and exercise. We try to make informed decisions about the foods we eat. The same degree of consideration should go into choosing food for your dog. Like people, obesity rates are on the rise for dogs.
Find out what’s behind the label. There’s a dizzying array of pet foods from which to choose and your dog is counting on you to select what’s best for him. Know and understand the correct protein and fat levels your dog requires to be fit and healthy.
Know what’s in your dog’s food and where it comes from. Read the label’s list of ingredients. Look for U.S. sourced ingredients. Search for named sources of fats or proteins and for whole-food sources, rather than meat by-products or meals. Avoid foods that use corn gluten or wheat gluten. They are cheap fillers and one of the hallmarks of poor-quality foods. Wheat, corn, and soy products can cause allergies in dogs and should be avoided.
Low-cost foods are not necessarily nutritious or economical. You could end up spending more on your dog, by feeding him a greater amount of cheap food and paying for vet bills associated with a poor diet. Higher quality food sources generally require smaller amounts to deliver the same nutritional content.
Talk with your vet about the proper nutritional needs for your dog. After all a healthy dog is a happy dog.
